Not Enough Rain Causes Spring Wheat Condition to Drop
USAgNet - 06/28/2017

Spring wheat crop condition ratings dropped slightly over the last week with 40 percent of the U.S. crop rated in good to excellent conditions, compared to 41 percent last week and 72 percent a year ago. Crop condition ratings remain high in Minnesota where 86 percent of the crop is rated in good to excellent condition, but remain below average in other states. Crop conditions increased slightly in Montana with 22 percent rated in good to excellent condition, up from 19 percent last week. Conditions declined slightly in North and South Dakota with 39 and 12 percent of the crop rated good to excellent respectively.

While moisture conditions and crop prospects are more favorable in eastern North Dakota and much of Minnesota, the majority of the region remains classified as abnormally dry or in a severe drought situation. Precipitation has fallen across much of the region in recent weeks, bringing some relief to soil moisture conditions, but the driest areas didn't receive enough and adverse yield damage has already taken place across the entire region. Crop development is close to average with 36 percent of the U.S. spring wheat headed out, compared to 35 percent on average. Percent of the crop headed ranges from 14 percent in Montana to 85 percent in South Dakota.

Much of the Northern durum region is still struggling with drier than normal conditions. In North Dakota, durum crop conditions improved slightly from last week with 24 percent of the crop rated in good to excellent condition. While this is an improvement from last week, crop conditions are well below recent years' averages. About 22 percent of the durum is headed out, behind last year's pace of 43 percent. The Montana durum region also remains dry. Crop conditions increased slightly this week with 19 percent of the durum rated in good to excellent condition. Nine percent of the Montana durum has headed out.
