Rain, Humidity Slow Spring Wheat Harvest
USAgNet - 08/21/2019

Harvest of the U.S. spring wheat crop remains behind average due to continued scattered precipitation and higher humidity in areas. Even in areas where the crop is ripe, sporadic rain showers interrupt and delay harvest, leading to a slow harvest pace. The most recent crop progress report from the USDA indicates that 16 percent of the U.S. spring wheat has been harvested, well behind the average of about 50 percent. Harvest is North Dakota is only about 12 percent complete, compared to 43 percent on average and 55 percent last year. Harvest is more advanced in the other three main producing states, ranging from 14 to 27 percent complete, but still behind average. Weather conditions for the upcoming week look to be more favorable for harvest progress.

Initial harvest reports from North Dakota indicate that yields so far have been equal to or lower than last year's averages, which some producers reported yields to be "lower than expected." Protein level reports for the most part have ranged from 13 to 15 percent. As only a small portion of harvest has taken place, yield and quality data will change from week to week. Crop conditions remain fairly stable with 70 percent of the spring wheat rated in good to excellent condition.

Harvest conditions have been very similar for the Northern durum crop -- rains interrupt and delay harvest progress. About 7 percent of the North Dakota durum crop has been harvested, well behind last year's pace of 31 percent. Crop conditions dropped slightly from last week, 72 percent of the durum is rated in good to excellent condition. In Montana, 13 percent has been harvested, compared to 32 percent on average.
