House Narrowly Passes Bill to Remove Gray Wolf Protections
USAgNet - 11/19/2018

Legislation authored by Wisconsin Congressman Sean Duffy that would remove the gray wolf from the federal endangered species list has been approved in the House. On Friday, lawmakers voted 196-180 in favor of the measure, which aims to allow states like Wisconsin the right to manage their own wolf populations by removing court-ordered protections.

The so-called 'Manage Our Wolves Act' was mostly supported by Republicans. Supporters say the wolf population has made a strong comeback in recent years and is now becoming a nuisance to livestock owners in rural areas.

Wolves in the affected states were relisted under the Endangered Species Act four years ago by a federal judge. Prior to that time, states were given the authority to regulate wolf populations, which prompted Wisconsin to offer a limited hunting season for the animals.

Duffy says removing these protections would be good for the environment, as well as for the deer population, which has also taken a hit from wolves.
