Some Spring Wheat Planting Underway
USAgNet - 04/24/2019

Planting of the U.S. spring wheat crop is now underway, reports the North Dakota Wheat Commission.

The weekly USDA Crop Progress report indicated that, as of Sunday, about 5 percent of the nation's intended spring wheat acreage was planted. While this is behind the five-year average of 22 percent, it is actually slightly ahead of last year's pace of 3 percent. Planting in Montana is farthest advanced at 10 percent, compared to 20 percent on average. South Dakota has put in about 2 percent of its acres, compared to 47 percent on average. Planting progress for both Minnesota and North Dakota stood at zero percent, however, producers in some areas of the state started putting spring wheat in the ground over the weekend. With the warm, dry conditions forecast for much of this week, fields will hopefully continue to dry out to allow for more progress.

Precipitation and cooler temperatures forecast for the weekend could cause delays. Soil moisture conditions for most of the region are more than plentiful with 80-90 percent of the soil moisture rated as being adequate to surplus. Planting has the potential to progress quickly if warm weather allows fields to dry out and significant precipitation stays out of the forecast.

The March Prospective Plantings report estimated that U.S. spring wheat acreage will be down 3 percent this year, dropping from 13.2 million acres to 12.8 million. Minnesota, Montana and South Dakota are projecting declines of 3 to 10 percent, while North Dakota acres are projected to increase by 2 percent to 6.7 million. U.S. durum acres are expected to fall 31 percent to 1.4 million acres. North Dakota durum acres are expected to be 750,000, down 32 percent. Acres in Montana are projected to fall 31 percent to 580,000. Four percent of the intended durum acres have been planted in Montana, slightly behind the average of 7 percent. Very little durum has been planted so far in North Dakota.
