Taste NY Cafe Celebrates Pembroke Travel Plaza Opening

New York State Wednesday announced that the newest Taste NY location is now officially open along the NYS Thruway (I-90 eastbound) at the Pembroke Travel Plaza, located at milepost 397 in Corfu, New York between exits 48A (Pembroke -- Rte. 77) and 48 (Batavia -Rte. 98.) This is the first Taste NY location to open along the Thruway west of Rochester. The Taste NY Cafe features a wide range of food and beverage items from Western New York and across the State, helping to boost the New York State agricultural industry and encourage tourism to New York's farms and small businesses.

State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball said, "We're so excited to bring visitors traveling from Western New York a taste of the region--from New York dairy to maple. The Taste NY program has grown dramatically since it was created by the Governor and shows no signs of slowing down. I thank our partners at the Thruway Authority and Delaware North for helping to share the story of our great agricultural producers in New York and encourage agri-tourism across the State."

NYS Thruway Authority Acting Executive Director Matthew J. Driscoll said, "The Taste NY Cafe at the Pembroke Service Area is an excellent new option for Thruway motorists to enjoy local food and beverages as they travel along the Thruway system. It's a great place for travelers to take a break and enjoy a cup of coffee, snack or dairy item from a diverse selection of local products. The Thruway Authority is proud to support Governor Cuomo's commitment to expand New York's growing food and beverage industry."

Visitors to the Taste NY Cafe can enjoy a wide variety of grab-and-go snacks and drinks, such as popcorn from Jamestown Popcorn, Mayer Brothers beverages, and Upstate Niagara dairy products. Hot food and beverage items, such as Zweigle's hot dogs from Rochester and DeLima Coffee from Cicero, are also available.

Rob Robinson, Delaware North's district manager for its NYS Thruway travel plaza locations, said, "Delaware North has been serving guests in New York State for more than 100 years, so we know just how distinctive and varied the food offerings can be from all corners of the state. We embrace the Taste NY program and look forward to showcasing these items for Thruway travelers."

Eduardo Estrella, account executive, Sweet Sam's Baking Company, said, "The Taste NY Cafe is nothing short of amazing! Customers will be able to find New York made goods all throughout the cafe, including our beloved pound cakes that are made from scratch using only the finest quality ingredients. It has allowed us, Sweet Sam's Baking Company, a bakery from the Bronx, to showcase our New York pride all throughout the Empire State."

Michael Garlick, president of Paul Delima Coffee, said, "Paul Delima Coffee is proud to service the Delaware North Pembroke location with our outstanding line of coffees for their new Taste NY Cafe."

The Taste NY Cafe's official opening follows the launch of the Southern Tier Welcome Center last week. The Southern Tier Welcome Center features a Taste NY facility showcasing hundreds of New York's food and beverage businesses.

There are now three Taste NY locations in Western New York, including Niagara Falls State Park's Cave of the Winds Gift Shop and Top of the Falls Restaurant.

Taste NY is an initiative launched by Governor Cuomo in 2013 to promote New York;s food and beverage industries. It is overseen by the Department of Agriculture and Markets and has created opportunities for local producers to showcase their goods at a variety of venues throughout the State and at large public events, such as the Great New York State Fair and the Barclays Tournament at Bethpage State Park.

Over the last three years, the Taste NY initiative has seen steady growth and recognition. The program reported sales of $4.5 million in 2015 and nearly tripled those figures to more than $13.1 million in 2016. Today, New York products sold under Taste NY branding are available in more than 60 locations throughout the State as well as the New York State Office of Trade and Tourism in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
