USDA to Survey Maine and New York Potato Growers
New York Ag Connection - 10/05/2018

Beginning in late October, the Northeastern Regional Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will be conducting the Fall Potato Grower Inquiry. The results of this survey will be used to build upon June's preliminary USDA statistics of 2018 fall potato crop planted and harvested acreage. The Fall Potato Grower Inquiry also collects preliminary sales and price data associated with the 2018 potato crop, published later in 2019.

The results of this survey will be used in conjunction with other data to establish 2018 potato yield and production forecasts in Maine, New York, and other fall potato crop states throughout the nation. NASS gathers the data for this survey online, by mail, by phone and through in-person interviews. "The cooperation of potato farmers is crucial to ensure that your State's potato crop is accurately represented in National potato production statistics." explained King Whetstone, regional director of the NASS Northeastern Regional Field Office. "NASS safeguards the privacy of all responses and publishes only State- and National-level data, ensuring that no individual operation or producer can be identified."

NASS will compile and analyze the survey information and publish the results in the November 8, 2018 monthly Crop Production publication. The publication will be available on the USDA-NASS website. For more information on NASS surveys and reports, call the NASS Northeastern Regional Field Office at 1-800-498-1518.
