NYS Gets Nearly Perfect Week for Fieldwork
New York Ag Connection - 06/28/2016

New York had an average of 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork. Weather was hot and very dry again this week and there is a strong need for more rainfall for ideal crop health. Areas experiencing dry conditions are reporting difficulty for crops such as corn, soybeans and many fruits to flourish. As a result of the dry weather, growers have reported signs of Spotted Wing Drosophila; in which mites often thrive in drying vine crops.

On a positive note, this has been another great week for hay, with the ground being very dry some farmers have been able to get their second cutting of alfalfa. Growers who are fortunate enough to have irrigation systems have some of the best looking crops in the region, and crops are at risk for those who do not have irrigation systems.

Field activities for the week included weed control, tillage, seeding, applying fertilizer, manure, pesticides, irrigation, repair and maintenance; additionally, more growers are reporting that they have started their second cutting of hay.
