Paddleboard Yoga Coming to Great New York State Fair
New York Ag Connection - 08/16/2019

Yoga. Paddleboards. The Great New York State Fair. Three things that will come together for the very first time at the 2019 Fair, as Standup Paddleboard Yoga (SUP Yoga) joins the Fair's roster of special events. Mike Calogero, founder of 315 Yoga and a veteran SUP Yoga instructor, will lead the classes on the pond in the State Park at the Fair. Classes take place at 8, 9 and 10 a.m. on each Saturday and Sunday of the Fair. Classes cost $25 (plus 67 cents in fees) and prior signup is required, here.

"We're always interested in bringing new and different ideas to the Fair. Yoga is a wonderful way to get one's mind and body right before taking on a day at the Fair," said Troy Waffner, Fair director.

Each participant will receive a free beach towel and two admission tickets to the Fair, along with a coupon for a free drink at Daniella's Catering and Events Steakhouse (formerly the Empire Room). Participants must be at least 18 years old and able to swim. A maximum of six people will be in each class. Participants should wear clothing that can get wet. Tickets purchased for SUP Yoga must be printed at home and brought to the Fair to be redeemed for admission and the yoga class. The towel and drink coupon will be provided at the class.

SUP Yoga generally takes place on calm water, such as in the enclosed State Park pond. It combines traditional yoga with practice for the balance needed to stay atop the paddleboard. 315 Yoga's website explains, "SUP Yoga will improve your yoga practice, you will slow down through postures you take for granted on a stable surface, you find focus and not become easily distracted, and train muscles not always used as you use your core to stabilize and smaller muscles to gain balance."

Founded in 1841, the Great New York State Fair is America's third largest state fair. The Fair showcases the best of New York agriculture, provides top-quality entertainment and is a key piece of Governor Cuomo's CNY Rising strategy of growing the Central New York economy through tourism. Fair attendance is up more than 40% since the beginning of more than $120 million in investments, with 1.27 million people attending the Fair in 2018. The 2019 Fair runs from Aug. 21 to Sept. 2.
