New York Field Day Focuses on Organic Soil Health

By Blake Jackson

The Organic Grains & Soil Health Field Day will take place on August 27, 2026, at Gianforte Farm in Cazenovia, New York, offering farmers and agricultural professionals an opportunity to learn about soil health practices in organic grain production systems.

The free event, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., will feature presentations, field demonstrations, and guided tours focused on improving soil health and farm sustainability.

Attendees will hear from Dr. Erin Silva of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and OGRAIN, who will discuss strategies for managing soil health in organic farming systems.

Participants will also take part in hands-on demonstrations, including a soil pit examination, a soil health trailer showcase, and tours of Gianforte Farm's grain cleaning and processing facilities.

Additional sessions will explore precision agriculture technologies, reduced-tillage practices for organic grain production, and value-added processing opportunities.

A complimentary barbecue lunch will be provided, giving attendees an opportunity to network with fellow farmers, researchers, and conservation professionals.

The field day is sponsored by several organizations, including Madison County Soil and Water Conservation District, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, CCE Central New York Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Program, and NOFA-NY.

Organizers say the event is designed to provide practical information that producers can use to improve soil health, enhance crop performance, and strengthen the long-term sustainability of their farming operations. Registration is required to attend.
