New York State Fair Adds Magic School Bus Live Show

By Blake Jackson

Families visiting The Great New York State Fair this summer will have the chance to join Ms. Frizzle and her famous class for a live theatrical adventure when TheaterWorksUSA presents The Magic School Bus: Lost in the Solar System at Chevy Court on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m.

Based on the popular Scholastic book series by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen, the musical follows Ms. Frizzle and her students on an unexpected journey through space after a routine field trip goes off course.

During their travels across Mercury, Venus, and Mars, the students face challenges that test their teamwork and problem-solving abilities while learning about science and the solar system along the way. The production is designed for audiences of all ages and is especially recommended for children ages 5 to 10.

“Offering programming that families can enjoy together is a priority for us,” said Fair Director Julie LaFave. “I know fans of all ages will delight in the memories made by The Magic School Bus, and we’re happy to bring it to fairgoers live on stage.”

The musical features a creative team that includes Marshall Pailet, who wrote the book, and Matthew Lee Robinson, who created the music and lyrics. Direction and choreography are by Connor Gallagher, whose Broadway credits include Beetlejuice.

The Great New York State Fair will run from Aug. 26 through Labor Day, Sept. 7. Fair organizers noted that all concerts and entertainment performances are included with admission. Adult tickets will cost $8, while children under 12 and adults age 65 and older can attend free.

The 2026 Chevrolet Music Series will feature 41 national recording acts across both Chevy Court and Suburban Park.

Chevy Court, located near Gate 1, will host daily concerts at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., while Suburban Park, situated on the western side of the fairgrounds beyond the Midway, will feature nightly 8 p.m. performances. Two additional 9 p.m. special shows are also planned at Chevy Court on Aug. 28 and Sept. 4.
