NYS Farmers Making Progress on Harvests Despite Weather

According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in New York, there were 4.5 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday.

Topsoil moisture supplies were 0 percent very short, 0 percent short, 52 percent adequate, and 48 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 70 percent adequate, and 28 percent surplus.

The apple harvest was reported at 65 percent complete, ahead of last year's 58 percent but near the 5-year average of 66 percent.

Barley harvested for grain was virtually complete at 98 percent, and corn harvested for silage was 78 percent complete, well ahead of last year's 57 percent and the 5-year average of 58 percent. The soybean harvest was 25 percent complete, near the 5-year average of 21.

The cabbage harvest, at 68 percent complete, lagged both last year at 89 percent and the 5-year average of 91 percent. Onions harvested, at 57 percent complete, also lagged last year's 66 percent complete and the 5-year average of 79 percent. The potato harvest was 72 percent complete. Snap beans harvested was 92 peercent complete, up from last week's 80 percent. The sweet corn harvest was on pace at 95 percent complete.
