The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced an extension of the public comment period for its ongoing review of U.S. beef grade standards.
The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is seeking feedback from stakeholders across the beef industry, including cattle producers, processors, wholesalers, retailers, food buyers, and consumers. The goal is to determine whether existing beef grading standards continue to meet industry needs or require updates.
The review began after the American Wagyu Association requested that AMS examine current grading standards and explore possible improvements. In response, AMS published a Request for Information (RFI) in the Federal Register on July 8, 2026.
The original comment period lasted 60 days and was scheduled to close on September 8, 2026. However, AMS received requests from industry participants asking for additional time to study the proposal and prepare detailed responses.
As a result, the USDA extended the comment period by 90 days. Stakeholders now have until December 7, 2026, to submit their views and recommendations.
USDA beef grade standards play an important role in the cattle and beef sectors. The standards are used to measure carcass characteristics that influence product quality and market value. These include marbling levels, ribeye area, fat coverage, carcass yield, and defects such as dark cutting beef.
The grading system helps establish consistent quality expectations throughout the beef supply chain. Producers, processors, distributors, retailers, and food service companies rely on these standards when buying and selling beef products.
AMS noted that grading standards are designed to measure product quality and economic value. They are separate from food safety inspections. Safety and wholesomeness evaluations are completed by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) before grading occurs.
By gathering feedback from a wide range of stakeholders, USDA hopes to better understand how current standards are functioning and whether updates could improve market transparency and efficiency.
The extended deadline gives industry participants additional time to review the standards and share recommendations. Feedback received during the comment period will help AMS determine whether revisions are needed and what changes may best serve in the evolving beef industry.
USDA encourages all interested parties to participate before the December 7, 2026, deadline. The agency believes broad industry engagement is important to ensure the grading system continues to support producers, businesses, and consumers across the beef sector.
