Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) has opened applications for its 2027 Farmer Grants program, with approximately $1 million available to support farmer-led projects.
Individual awards can reach $50,000, depending on the project's scope and complexity. Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. ET on December 8, 2026.
The program helps farmers investigate innovative agricultural practices and develop practical solutions to challenges affecting their operations.
Eligible projects may involve experiments, surveys, prototypes, on-farm demonstrations, research, or educational activities designed to deliver long-term benefits to agriculture.
Applicants must identify a technical advisor before preparing their proposals. Advisors contribute specialized knowledge beyond farming, including research planning, problem-solving, and communicating project findings.
They also provide ongoing guidance throughout the project, helping first-time grant recipients build experience and strengthen connections within their agricultural communities.
Funding is available for projects covering diverse subjects, including farm marketing and business management, crop production, livestock, aquaculture, hydroponics, and silvopasture.
The Farmer Grants program serves agricultural producers throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, including Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, West Virginia, Vermont, and Washington, D.C.
