Elwyn Voss Honored for Farm Leadership

By Blake Jackson

Elwyn Voss, a dedicated farmer, recently received the Distinctive Service Citation from the New York State Agricultural Society for his remarkable contributions to the agricultural sector. This award has been presented for over 60 years to individuals who have significantly advanced and promoted agriculture in the state.

At 82, Voss reflected on his early start in farming. His journey began at the age of five when his parents sent him to his grandparents’ dairy and potato farm. Over time, his summer visits turned into a passion for agriculture, eventually shaping his career.

Voss pursued a bachelor’s degree at Cornell University and later worked as a Cooperative Extension farm management agent, assisting farmers in improving their operations. His commitment to supporting farmers led him to earn a master’s degree in business administration, where he specialized in farm transition and estate planning.

During his studies, he initially believed life insurance had limited use for farm families. However, with further experience, he recognized its crucial role in farm succession planning. This realization led him to become a chartered life insurance underwriter and a chartered financial consultant, providing valuable financial guidance to farm families.

More than 40 years ago, Voss established The Voss Group, a Buffalo-based firm that helps farmers with succession planning, employee benefits, and retirement strategies. His firm has assisted hundreds of farms across multiple states in securing their future for the next generation.

Voss strongly believes in bridging emotional and financial aspects in farm planning. His efforts ensure that family farms remain within the family for future generations.

Beyond financial planning, Voss actively supports young people pursuing careers in agriculture. In 2011, he played a key role in founding the New York State Agricultural Society Foundation, which has awarded over 125 Ambassador Scholarships since its inception in 2014.

Voss also co-founded and sponsors the Next Generation Farmer Award, further contributing to the recognition of young agricultural professionals. He continues to be actively involved in various initiatives that strengthen the agricultural community.

Voss and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Alexandria Bay, New York, and cherish their large family, including children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
