Expert Session on Proven Pig Breeding and Sow Management

Expert Session on Proven Pig Breeding and Sow Management

By Blake Jackson

Adam and Ashley McFarland, owners and operators of Top Notch Meats, will share insights into their successful pig breeding and management program during an upcoming educational session on February 5 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. EST.

The discussion will highlight the key decisions and practices that have helped the McFarlands consistently produce champion pigs known for superior genetics, strong breed characteristics, and high-quality pork that delivers exceptional marbling, tenderness, and flavor.

Participants will learn how to evaluate and prepare boars and gilts for breeding, along with guidance on managing changes in nutrition and health as gilts transition into productive sows. The session will also address how to assess a sow’s long-term productivity and determine when she is no longer economically viable within a breeding operation.

Adam McFarland brings experience from commercial hog production along with a deep interest in show pig genetics, a combination that has shaped Top Notch Meats’ award-winning program. Ashley McFarland contributes additional expertise through her role as a regional livestock specialist with the Central New York Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Program.

This event is part of the 2025-26 Pig Production Cohort, offering valuable knowledge for both experienced and aspiring pig producers.
