FreshConnect Fresh2You: Doubling SNAP Benefits at New York Farmers' Markets for Enhanced Food Access

In an effort to bolster access to fresh produce and combat the reduction in federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, a groundbreaking initiative called FreshConnect Fresh2You has been launched in New York State. Under this program, eligible SNAP recipients can now enjoy double the buying power at farmers' markets across the state, enabling them to purchase a greater quantity of nutritious food, including dairy, meat, and produce.

Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the significance of this initiative, as it not only addresses the recent reduction in SNAP benefits but also promotes stronger relationships between local farmers and the communities they serve. By matching every dollar spent through SNAP with an additional dollar, Fresh2You empowers New Yorkers to make healthier food choices while simultaneously supporting local agriculture and strengthening the food supply chain.

Effective April 15, the FreshConnect Fresh2You initiative will provide SNAP beneficiaries at participating farmers' markets with $2 checks for every $2 spent, a considerable improvement from the previous ratio of $2 for every $5. These checks can be utilized to purchase a wide range of items, such as dairy products, meats, fish, eggs, and fresh produce.

Additionally, the program extends beyond SNAP recipients, as veterans, service members, and their immediate families are also eligible to participate. The FreshConnect Checks program enables veterans to acquire $50 in FreshConnect coupons, distributed by the New York State Department of Veterans' Services offices.

Diane Eggert, Executive Director of the Farmers' Market Federation of New York, expressed enthusiasm for the FreshConnect Fresh2You initiative, highlighting its dual benefit of enhancing the purchasing power of SNAP recipients while supporting local farmers and sustainable agriculture. The program contributes to a healthier diet for those with SNAP benefits, incorporating local foods, and stimulates the sales of locally grown and produced items.
