Gabriella Macari Recognized Among World's Top Wine Experts

By Blake Jackson

New York’s wine industry is celebrating a significant achievement as Gabriella Macari, a wine educator, independent consultant, and co-founder of Cab Franc Forward, has earned the prestigious Master of Wine (MW) designation. The accomplishment recognizes her extensive knowledge of the global wine business and strengthens her role as an advocate for New York wine producers.

Macari was officially welcomed into the Institute of Masters of Wine during its annual awards ceremony in London on October 27, 2026, according to the New York Wine & Grape Foundation (NYWGF). She also received the 2026 Vintners’ Company Award, an annual honor recognizing the highest performance in the business of wine theory examination.

Raised at her family's Macari Vineyards on Long Island's North Fork, Macari was the only American among seven candidates announced as new Masters of Wine this summer. She joins an international network of 427 active Masters of Wine representing 31 countries.

“Earning the Master of Wine title is the culmination of years of study, persistence, and support from so many people,” said Gabriella Macari MW.

“Having grown up in a New York vineyard, I’m especially proud to bring this achievement home. Working alongside producers across the state has deepened my appreciation for the quality of our wines and the talent behind them. I’m excited to use what I’ve learned to help more people discover what makes New York wine so compelling.”

The Master of Wine qualification is among the most challenging credentials in the industry. Candidates must successfully complete three blind-tasting examinations involving 12 wines each, five written theory examinations covering viticulture, winemaking, and the broader wine business, and an original research paper.

Macari's professional background includes vineyard and winery operations, business strategy, distribution, marketing, and communications. Her experience in international markets has helped her understand the challenges producers face in pricing, promoting, and distributing their products.

“Gabriella’s achievement is a proud moment for the entire New York wine community,” said Sam Filler, Executive Director of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation.

“She brings deep knowledge, a collaborative spirit, and a commitment to helping our wines earn the recognition they deserve. Having another champion for New York among the world’s Masters of Wine creates exciting opportunities to showcase the quality and diversity of our regions with a wider audience.”

The Vintners’ Company Award recognizes Macari's expertise in the commercial side of the wine industry, including pricing, distribution, marketing, and international sales.

She also co-founded Cab Franc Forward, a winery-led nonprofit initiative promoting New York Cabernet Franc and encouraging collaboration among regional producers.

Macari research paper explored American wine consumers' awareness and opinions regarding herbicide use in vineyards, connecting environmental stewardship with consumer education.

“I’d love to see more open conversations about how grapes are grown, so consumers can understand the choices each producer makes,” said Macari. “Wine education should encourage people to ask questions and discover how farming and place shape what’s in their glass.”

Macari's achievement represents both a personal milestone and an opportunity to increase international awareness of New York's wine regions, producers, and agricultural practices.
