Holstein Competition Returns to New York State Fair

Agriculture will once again take center stage at the 2026 Great New York State Fair, offering visitors a wide range of opportunities to experience the state's farming industry through livestock shows, educational exhibits, agricultural demonstrations, and locally produced foods.

One of the featured events will be the Holstein Dairy Cattle Competition on August 30 at the Toyota Coliseum, which is expected to attract its largest number of entries in nearly a decade.

Fairgoers will also find expanded livestock exhibits, growing participation in animal competitions, and a variety of hands-on agricultural experiences throughout the fairgrounds.

“There are lots of exciting activities and events taking place this year at the Great New York State Fair and I’m so proud to say that agriculture is at the heart of so many of them," State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball said.

"Fairgoers can meet and engage with farmers, experience New York agriculture through exhibits like the Voice of the Farmer Garden, see farm animals up close, and sample some delicious local food, all while learning more about how food goes from farm to table. There is truly something for everyone, and we encourage our fairgoers to come out and celebrate New York agriculture.”

New attractions this year include a 4,000-square-foot FFA Building, the debut of the Behind the Halter dairy youth showcase, and the new Big Cheese display celebrating New York’s dairy heritage. Visitors can also enjoy the Voice of the Farmer Garden, the Mobile Dairy Experience, horse demonstrations, goat competitions, and a variety of livestock exhibits.

Food remains a major highlight of the fair, with New York-grown products featured throughout the grounds. Attractions include the updated Potato Booth, the Taste NY Tasting Yard, local cheese displays, the famous Butter Sculpture, maple products, honey exhibits, and special events such as Grape Day.

With agriculture woven throughout the fair experience, organizers say visitors will have countless opportunities to learn about New York farming, meet producers, and enjoy products grown and made across the state.
