Cornell Cooperative Extension Suffolk’s Agricultural Stewardship and Vegetable/Potato Programs, in collaboration with Cornell Small Farms and NY Soil Health, are hosting a Soil Health Field Day on July 22 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
The event will be held at the Long Island Horticultural Research & Extension Center (LIHREC) and will include presentations and demonstrations on innovative soil amendments.
Participants will explore current research on soil enhancers like compost and biochar and their application in vegetable, nursery, and vineyard systems.
Presenters will also discuss how these amendments improve soil structure and increase farm resilience to climate change. In addition, summer cover crop practices will be featured.
Attendees are also invited to join a Dialogue Group hosted by the Rich Earth Institute in partnership with Cornell University and Cornell Cooperative Extension.
The session will run from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. at LIHREC and seeks feedback from farmers, advisors, and land managers on unconventional soil amendments-including human urine and various types of biochar.
Each participant will receive a $60 stipend, and all responses will remain confidential. Refreshments will be provided.
