New York Apple Growers Gain Variety-Based Insurance

New York Apple Growers Gain Variety-Based Insurance

By Blake Jackson

Beginning with the 2027 crop year, New York apple growers will have the option to insure fresh apples by individual variety rather than through broader varietal groupings, following updates announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency (RMA).

The change will also allow producers to establish optional units for specific apple varieties, providing more customized risk protection.

“RMA worked with New York apple growers to make this improvement,” said RMA Administrator Pat Swanson. “We’re committed to improving risk management options for specialty crops, and this change is a direct result of the specialty crops roundtable discussions we conducted as part of that effort.”

Eligible varieties include Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji, Empire, Cortland, McIntosh, Golden Delicious, Pink Lady, SnapDragon, RubyFrost, EverCrisp, Envy, and several others. Growers with varieties not listed individually may use the “All Other Varieties (Fresh)” category, while a general “Fresh” option will remain available.

RMA worked alongside New York apple industry representatives to identify varieties suitable for individual coverage and improved pricing elections.

The new policy is designed to provide more accurate insurance options that better reflect the value and production risks of specific apple varieties.

New York apple growers interested in updating coverage for the 2027 crop year should contact a crop insurance agent before the November 20, 2026, sales closing date.
