New York businesses the backbone of our economy

Governor Kathy Hochul is encouraging New Yorkers to support local and regional small businesses during the holiday season, especially on Small Business Saturday, November 25, 2023. Small businesses play a vital role in the New York economy, representing 98 percent of all New York State businesses and supporting 40 percent of the private sector workforce. By shopping locally, New Yorkers can invest revenue and tax dollars back into their communities, support jobs, and further promote regional economic growth.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy,” Governor Hochul said. “They create jobs, foster innovation, and contribute to the unique character of our communities. This Small Business Saturday, I encourage all New Yorkers to show their support for local businesses by shopping at their favorite stores, restaurants, and boutiques.”

New York State offers a variety of resources and programs to support small businesses, including: The State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI), which provides funding to lenders who make loans to small businesses.

The Business Express website, which provides information on a variety of business resources, including licensing, permits, and taxes.
The Entrepreneurship Assistance Centers (EACs), which provide instruction, training, and technical assistance to entrepreneurs.

In addition to these resources, there are many ways that New Yorkers can support small businesses on a daily basis:

Shop local: Make an effort to shop at small, local stores in your community.
Purchase gift cards: Many small businesses offer gift cards or gift certificates.
Head to your local farmer's market: Farmer's markets are a great place to find unique and locally made products.
Visit or order take out or delivery from your local bar or restaurant:
