New York hosts 2024 national Envirothon

By Blake Jackson

New York State is set to host the 2024 National Conservation Foundation (NCF)-Envirothon, an international environmental competition for high school students. Winning teams from around the world will gather from July 28 to August 3 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. This marks the first time New York has hosted the event.

Ulster County's The Mount Academy emerged victorious in the New York State Envirothon, earning the chance to represent the state in Geneva. The competition, held at SUNY Cortland, saw teams from across the state competing in environmental science and natural resource management.

The Envirothon tests students' knowledge in areas like soils, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and this year's theme, "Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Future." Students participate in written tests, interactive stations, and oral presentations throughout the competition.

The New York State Envirothon Committee, comprised of various environmental organizations and agencies, coordinates the event. Sponsors and volunteers play a crucial role in making the competition possible.

The 2024 Envirothon underscores the importance of environmental education and youth engagement in addressing pressing issues like climate change. It provides a platform for students to showcase their passion for conservation and sustainability.
