New York launches $21.6M Dairy Modernization Grant Program

By Blake Jackson

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a $21.6 million Dairy Modernization Grant Program to support New York's dairy farmers and agricultural marketing cooperatives.

This initiative aims to enhance on-farm milk storage capacity and improve milk transportation and storage infrastructure.

“New York’s dairy farms are the backbone of our agricultural industry, and they contribute so much to our communities, our economies, and our long legacy of agricultural excellence,” Governor Hochul said. “I’m proud that the Dairy Modernization Grant Program will help our dairy farmers and processors make much needed improvements to their technology and facilities, helping New York State to remain a powerhouse in dairy nationally and ultimately getting nutritious, locally produced dairy products to more New Yorkers statewide.”

The Farm and Food Growth Fund (FFGF) will administer the grant program, awarding grants ranging from $50,000 to $250,000 for eligible projects.

These projects may include the installation of milk storage tanks, milk tankers, milk pipelines, upgraded cooling systems, and more.

Interested applicants can attend virtual open office hours on November 13, December 8, and January 15, 2024, to learn more about the program and the application process. Applications are due on February 14, 2025.

This investment aligns with Governor Hochul's commitment to supporting the dairy industry and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

The FY25 Enacted Budget includes significant funding for dairy manufacturing facilities, promotional efforts, and environmental sustainability initiatives.

“The Dairy Modernization Grant Program provides critical funding to support our dairy farmers and cooperatives by investing in projects that upgrade agricultural facilities and facilitate the purchase of new equipment," said New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball. "I thank Governor Hochul for her continued support of New York’s dairy farmers and encourage anyone eligible to learn more about this program and consider applying for these critical funds.”

Full details regarding project eligibility can be found online.
