Step into Dickens world - Skaneateles Christmas magic

Step into Dickens world - Skaneateles Christmas magic

By Blake Jackson

Nestled amidst rolling farmland, the quaint village of Skaneateles, New York, transforms into a Dickensian wonderland each December. This year marks the 30th anniversary of its beloved Dickens Christmas festival, coinciding with the 180th anniversary of "A Christmas Carol."

Though Charles Dickens never set foot in Skaneateles, the village's historic architecture and charming shops provide the perfect backdrop for his timeless tale. Each weekend, the village comes alive with costumed characters, festive activities, and a palpable air of Yuletide cheer.

Immerse yourself in a bygone era with horse-drawn carriage rides, carolers in Victorian garb, and playful snowman-building competitions. Discover interactive storytelling at trunk shows or lose yourself in the merriment of a Fezziwig-inspired Christmas Ball with lively English country dancing.

For a heartwarming dose of nostalgia, catch "A Christmas Story: The Radio Play" at the Auburn Public Theater, or join Father Christmas for a story-filled visit. Little ones will delight in Mother Goose's captivating tale-telling sessions while munching on roasted chestnuts and sipping warm eggnog.

Beyond the festive cheer, Dickens Christmas plays a vital role in supporting local businesses. Many Skaneateles shops rely on seasonal tourism, and the event draws visitors eager to explore their unique offerings.

"It builds community relations and promotes your business," Hilary Fenner, the Chamber of Commerce director, says. "Local agricultural businesses like Byrne Dairy provide eggnog samples, and that fosters serendipitous meetups and sales."

Jim Greene, the event's producer and a seasoned Dickens aficionado, adds, "The festival showcases our rural life. Skaneateles boasts a rich history, from its teasel farms to the abundance of farm stands like Strawberry Fields."

Indeed, exploring the village's farmers markets and quaint shops fosters a sense of discovery and delight. With locally sourced products and farm-to-table restaurants, Skaneateles offers a taste of authentic charm alongside its Dickensian spirit.

Strawberry Fields, a local gift shop, thrives during Dickens Christmas. Proprietor Linda Eldred shares, "The festival brings in new customers and creates a festive atmosphere with the costumed characters singing carols."

In return, Eldred donates trees for the celebration and promotes the event. "We've had amazing experiences, like a woman finding the perfect Christmas tree after a difficult time," she says. "It's truly magical."

Offering a mix of free and ticketed events, Dickens Christmas runs every weekend through December 24th. Step into a world of Victorian charm, support local businesses, and create lasting memories in the heart of Skaneateles. Click here for a complete schedule.
