Dairy’s Economic Role in New York State

Dairy’s Economic Role in New York State

By Blake Jackson

National Agriculture Week has begun, celebrating the contributions of farmers across New York State. Running from Monday through Friday, March 21, the week emphasizes the economic importance of agriculture, with dairy leading the sector. The American Dairy Association North East highlights dairy as a major contributor to the state’s economy. Additionally, Tuesday marks National Agriculture Day, a time to recognize the hard work of farmers.

"Agriculture is so important in New York State because it's our biggest economic engine," said Richard A. Ball, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. And especially dairy, because dairy is the biggest part of our economic sector in New York. We figure in every national conversation about dairy and milk, and I'm very proud of that. So it's a huge economic impact on our state, thousands of jobs, lots of people engaged. But most importantly, it's about connecting the dots. between a community that produces food and a community that needs that nutrition, needs that food every day."

New York dairy farmers face challenges such as labor shortages and increasing costs. However, recent data indicates an increase in dairy milk consumption. According to the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service, U.S. fluid milk sales rose by 0.5% in 2024, marking the first increase since 2009.

Key facts about New York’s dairy industry include:

  • Dairy contributes $3.9 billion annually to the state’s economy.
  • 94% of dairy farms are family-owned, often passed down through generations.
  • Farmers prioritize cow care and sustainable practices year-round.
  • New York ranks fifth in national milk production and is the top producer of yogurt, cottage cheese, and sour cream.
  • Milk is the official state beverage, while yogurt is the official state snack.

National Agriculture Week serves as a reminder of the essential role dairy farmers play in producing nutritious food and sustaining local economies. Despite challenges, the industry continues to grow, reinforcing its impact on communities throughout the state.
