New York state invests in farmers markets

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball announced today the awarding of nearly $250,000 to six farmers market organizations across the state through the Farmers Market Resiliency Grant Program.

This funding, part of the 2023-24 New York State Budget, aims to bolster farmers markets by enhancing online sales, improving infrastructure, and strengthening connections between farmers and consumers.

The grant recipients include organizations from various regions, each with distinct project goals. Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation in Kings County will focus on youth agriculture internships, community gardens, and market promotion.

Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Sullivan County will upgrade market infrastructure and expand marketing efforts. Webster's Joe Obbie Farmers’ Market in Monroe County aims to increase market attendance and create an online presence.

Fulton Market Association in New York County will conduct a farmer survey and develop a plan for a larger indoor market. Village of Greenwood Lake in Orange County will focus on food waste reduction and expanding the Market Bucks program.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County will develop an online ordering system and enhance marketing efforts.

These investments align with Governor Kathy Hochul's commitment to a resilient food system. In addition to the Farmers’ Market Resiliency Grant Program, the state supports initiatives like Nourish New York, the 30% NYS School Initiative, and the Farm-to-School program to increase access to locally grown foods.

By supporting farmers' markets and local food systems, New York State is taking significant steps to ensure a sustainable and thriving agricultural sector.
