New York Youth Invited to Spring Tractor Safety Course

By Blake Jackson

Young people interested in learning safe tractor and machinery operation will have the opportunity to participate in the National Youth Safe Tractor & Machinery Safety Course this spring in Hamden, New York.

The training program helps youth gain important safety knowledge while working toward a U.S. Department of Labor Certificate of Training, which is required for young workers to legally operate certain farm tractors and equipment.

The course is designed for participants ages 14 to 19 who want to become certified, although individuals 13 years and older are welcome to attend the classes. Only those who are at least 14 years old will be eligible to complete the driving portion and receive certification.

Classroom sessions will take place on April 27, April 29, May 4, and May 6 during evening hours at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County office in Hamden. Hands-on driving sessions will be held May 2 and May 9 at Eklunds Farm Machinery in Stamford, followed by a final test on May 16.

The course fee is $45, and interested participants can contact program organizer Desiree Keever at dnk2@cornell.edu or (607) 865-6531.
