June is Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month, and Erie County is highlighting the Erie Grown initiative to encourage residents to connect with locally grown food.
Erie Grown is a free online tool designed to help people locate farms, farm stands, farmers markets, and mobile markets throughout Erie County, making fresh food more accessible and convenient.
“Supporting Erie Grown means supporting our farmers,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “Every time you buy local, you help strengthen our agricultural economy and preserve the farmland that keeps Erie County green and growing.”
Shopping at local farmers markets offers a wide selection of seasonal produce while supporting small-scale farmers. The Erie Grown Fresh Produce Finder makes it easy to see what’s currently in season and where to find it nearby.
Many markets listed in Erie Grown also accept various forms of nutrition assistance, helping make healthy food more affordable and accessible. These include:
- FMNP Accepted - Vendors that accept Farmers Market Nutrition Program checks, available to eligible WIC and senior participants.
- FCC Accepted - Markets with vendors who may accept FreshConnect Checks.
- SNAP Accepted - Locations where customers can use SNAP/EBT benefits.
To raise awareness, the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning will post weekly updates on its website and social media. These updates will highlight local markets as they open for the season and provide details about the nutrition programs accepted by each.
“Food equity means everyone has consistent access to fresh, affordable, and nourishing food that reflects their personal values, supports their health, and aligns with their dietary needs,” said Sarah Gatti, Chair of the Buffalo and Erie County Food Policy Council and Principal Planner with the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning. “It’s about building a food system that works for all, not just for some.”
Increasing fruit and vegetable intake can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Supporting Erie Grown also boosts the local economy and promotes sustainable farming practices.
