The New York State Agriculture Commissioner, Richard A. Ball, has unveiled an exciting opportunity to enhance access to fresh, locally grown produce for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants. The FreshConnect CSA for SNAP program aims to promote Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) initiatives and support New York's farmers while ensuring all New Yorkers have access to wholesome, local foods.
This initiative is a crucial step towards achieving Governor Kathy Hochul's vision of bolstering demand for New York agricultural products and strengthening the state's food supply chain.
Under the FreshConnect CSA for SNAP program, eligible organizations in New York can apply to defray up to half the cost of weekly CSA shares for SNAP participants. By utilizing SNAP funds to purchase these shares, recipients can access the popular CSA model at a reduced cost, while farmers receive the full value of their produce. This win-win program not only empowers SNAP beneficiaries with greater access to nutritious food but also supports local farmers in their sustainable practices.
With $250,000 in available funding through the Request for Applications, awarded organizations can receive grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until October 20, 2023, via the Grants Gateway.
To shed light on the program and assist potential applicants, a FreshConnect CSA for SNAP Program - Informational Webinar will be held on August 3, 2023, at 11:00 am. This webinar will offer valuable insights into the program's objectives and application process.
The FreshConnect CSA for SNAP program is part of Governor Hochul's broader commitment to supporting farmers and enhancing local food production. Earlier this year, the FreshConnect Fresh2You initiative was announced, aiming to double the buying power for SNAP recipients at farmers' markets throughout New York State.
Eligible New Yorkers now receive a dollar-for-dollar match of up to $50 per day at participating farmers' markets, enabling them to access more nutritious food, including fresh produce, dairy, and meats.
Governor Hochul's dedication to strengthening New York's food systems is evident in the FY 2024 Budget, which includes substantial investments to boost demand for local agricultural products and improve food access in underserved communities.
The budget allocates $2 million to enhance community garden programs and introduces a $10 million grant program to support the establishment of farm markets and food stores in underserved regions of the state.
The FreshConnect CSA for SNAP program and its complementary initiatives are poised to create a healthier, more sustainable future for New Yorkers while fostering a thriving agricultural landscape. Together, these efforts reinforce the state's commitment to nourishing its communities and ensuring access to fresh, local foods for everyone.
