Future farmers steal the show at Cattaraugus county meeting

By Blake Jackson

The Cattaraugus County Legislature meeting on Wednesday featured a heart-warming presentation by the Farm Bureau, highlighting the importance of young people in agriculture's future.

Farm Bureau board member Katie Hill opened with a concerning statistic: a 9% decline in New York farms between 2017 and 2022. To counter this trend, Hill introduced three inspiring Cattaraugus County 4-H members:

  • Grandin Vacco of Springville showcased making maple syrup, complete with a traditional sap bucket.
  • Karina Dueer of East Otto presented on her passion for driving horses, using digital photos to bring her project to life.
  • Ayken Vacco, Grandin's brother, demonstrated the fascinating life cycle of deer antlers, even displaying two sheds he found that very day.

The young presenters captivated the legislators with their knowledge and enthusiasm, answering all questions with confidence.

Following the presentations, Farm Bureau President Michael Telaak announced a new "Distinguished Friends of Farm Bureau" program, recognizing legislators who actively participate in Farm Bureau initiatives.

After a brief adjournment, legislators enjoyed a delightful spread of locally grown food, featuring buffalo meatballs, strawberry-rhubarb pie, and fresh dairy products.

The remainder of the meeting focused on county business:

  • Local Law 2, setting fees for county health services, was passed unanimously after a public hearing with no speakers.
  • Catherine Mackay was reappointed as director of the Department of the Aging and Youth Bureau for a four-year term.
  • A $750,000 Community Development Block Grant application was approved to support machinery financing for Steelbound Brewery & Distillery's expansion in Ellicottville.
  • Legislators voiced support for increased local funding for road construction materials, currently contested by state lawmakers.
  • Three appointments were made to the Community Services Board: Daniel Gayton, Melissa Sullivan, and Legislator Kelly Andreano.
