New York’s dairy industry experienced a solid start to 2025, with milk production totaling 1.36 billion pounds in January. This marks a 2.0% increase from the 1.33 billion pounds produced in January 2024.
The steady rise in production is attributed to higher milk output per cow, as the number of dairy cows in the state remained unchanged at 630,000 head.
The average milk yield per cow increased from 2,115 pounds in January 2024 to 2,155 pounds in January 2025, reflecting improved efficiency and favorable conditions for dairy farming.
Meanwhile, the average milk price received by New York farmers in December 2024 stood at $24.40 per hundredweight. Although this represents a $0.90 decrease from November 2024, it remains $2.20 higher than the price recorded in December 2023. This price fluctuation highlights the ongoing market adjustments within the dairy sector.
New York continues to be a key player in the Northeastern dairy industry, maintaining stable herd numbers while increasing milk production.
