According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in New York, there were 4 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday, October 29, 2023. This is slightly below average for the time of year, but farmers were able to make some progress despite the rain.
Topsoil moisture supplies were 0 percent very short, 0 percent short, 72 percent adequate, and 28 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were 1 percent very short, 3 percent short, 76 percent adequate, and 20 percent surplus. These moisture levels are favorable for crop growth and development.
Here are the crop conditions in New York as of October 29, 2023:
- Corn: 89% mature, 36% harvested
- Soybeans: 67% harvested
- Winter wheat: 86% planted, 60% emerged
- Potatoes: 85% harvested
- Pasture: 23% good to excellent
Overall, the 2023 New York crop season is on track. Farmers are making good progress harvesting corn, soybeans, and potatoes. Winter wheat planting is complete, and the crop is off to a good start. Pasture conditions are good.
