The New York Wine & Grape Foundation (NYWGF) has released its 2024-2025 Research Reports, highlighting a year of innovative studies focused on enhancing viticulture, enology, and wine business practices throughout New York State.
The annual reports are essential tools for growers, producers, and industry leaders navigating an increasingly complex environment marked by climate change, evolving consumer tastes, pest challenges, and global competition.
Founded in 1985, NYWGF has made research a foundational element of its mission. The organization supports initiatives that strengthen the resilience, sustainability, and competitiveness of New York’s wine and grape industry.
Through its dynamic Research Program, backed by both private and state funds, NYWGF partners with top-tier institutions such as Cornell AgriTech in Geneva and the Cornell Lake Erie Research and Extension Lab in Portland.
“Investing in research is one of the most important ways we can ensure the long-term health and competitiveness of New York’s wine and grape industry,” said Sam Filler, Executive Director of NYWGF.
“From vineyard pest management to climate-resilient varietals to understanding consumer behavior, these projects deliver real-world solutions. That’s why NYWGF is deeply committed to sustaining and expanding our Research Program it’s an essential foundation for our industry’s future.”
Each year, NYWGF’s Research Committee comprising board members, growers, and winery professionals reviews proposals, meets with researchers, and selects projects based on pressing industry concerns. Their goal is to fund research that delivers practical, actionable results for industry stakeholders.
“As someone who sees this industry from a few different sides, I understand how vital it is to stay ahead of the challenges facing our industry today. From increasing pest and disease pressure to labor availability, rising production costs, and changing market expectations, the grape and wine industry is navigating a critical moment,” said Michael Colizzi, Chair of the NYWGF Board Research Committee.
