NYS Farmers Turn to Fall Tillage as Crops Mature



According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in New York, there were 3.5 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday.

Topsoil moisture supplies were 3 percent very short, 23 percent short, 67 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were 7 percent very short, 14 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus.

Fall tillage was estimated at 25 percent complete, behind last year's 36 percent and the 5-year average of 31 percent.

The grape harvest was 17 percent.

Apples were 25 percent harvested, while pears were 46 percent harvested and peaches were 86 percent.

The cabbage harvest stood at 75 percent with dry onions at 71 percent. Snap beans were 78 percent harvested while potatoes were at a normal pace of 56 percent. The sweet corn harvest was 80 percent complete, slightly ahead of last year and the 5-year average.
