New York Expands Funding to Grow Meat Processing Capacity

By Blake Jackson

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, in partnership with the Hudson Valley AgriBusiness Development Corporation (HVADC), has announced more than $4.7 million in funding through the second round of the Meat Processing Expansion Grant (MPEG) Program.

The initiative is designed to strengthen New York’s meat processing industry by expanding existing facilities and supporting the development of new processing operations.

“As a critical component of our food supply chain, New York’s meat processors play a significant role in ensuring that nutritious food reaches consumers’ tables. Over the past few years, we have made it a priority to provide this industry with the resources needed to grow and meet consumer demand, while supporting our producers," State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball said.

"This next round of funding expands eligibility to reach more New York businesses, helping them strengthen their operations, expand their businesses, and make New York meat products more affordable to our communities. I encourage all New York processors who are eligible to apply for this grant opportunity.”

The expanded program follows nearly $5 million awarded to 26 projects in 2023. It supports projects that improve processing capacity for beef, pork, lamb, goat, poultry, and other meat products while strengthening the state’s food supply chain and rural economy.

“This second round of the MPEG program will help to further strengthen market viability for local meat producers across the state. We have seen an increased demand for meat processing services, and at times farmers have had to scramble to find capacity at USDA-inspected meat processing facilities," Mary Ann Johnson, Deputy Director of HVADC, said.

"The capacity gap has in the past restricted getting product to market while at the same time there is an increased consumer demand for more locally sourced meat.”

Grant awards ranging from $50,000 to $250,000 are available for capital improvements, including equipment purchases, machinery installation, facility upgrades, and leasehold improvements.

Eligible applicants include licensed meat processors, startup businesses planning to obtain the required licenses, and qualifying nonprofit organizations.

Applications are open now and will be accepted through September 23, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. HVADC will also host virtual office hours in July and August to assist prospective applicants with the application process.
