The United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) recently released its "Prospective Plantings" report, providing valuable insights into anticipated U.S. crop plantings for the 2024 season. The report leverages survey data collected from nearly 73,000 farmers nationwide during the first two weeks of March.
New York growers are projected to maintain soybean acreage at 350,000 acres, reflecting stability compared to 2023. Corn plantings, however, are forecast to experience a modest decline of 1%, reaching an estimated 1.03 million acres.
The report further details projections for other key New York crops. Barley plantings are anticipated to decrease by 11% to 8,000 acres, while oat plantings are expected to see a 5% reduction to 58,000 acres.
The hay harvest area is forecast to contract slightly by 1% to 1.11 million acres. Winter wheat plantings, in contrast, are projected to remain unchanged at 150,000 acres. This information serves as a crucial resource for agricultural stakeholders, informing decisions related to production planning, market analysis, and potential risk mitigation strategies.
