The US Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will begin gathering information about crop production practices from farmers in Pennsylvania and New York in October 2023, as part of the 2023 Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS).
ARMS is an important survey that tracks how farms in Pennsylvania and New York use technology to manage their main field crops. King Whetstone, director of the NASS Northeastern Regional Field Office, said, "The data from this survey also help policymakers and farm groups understand the factors driving the costs and returns of crop production."
NASS will survey a sample of barley, oat, peanut, and soybean producers across the country this year. NASS advises farmers to have their fertilizer and pesticide application records on hand to speed up the survey process. A NASS representative will contact farmers to schedule an interview to help them fill out the questionnaire. Farmers who opted for email service may also get an email reminder.
From May 2023 to April 2024, ARMS is conducted in three phases. The first phase screened participants to make sure they have the commodity of interest and would accurately represent the entire US farm sector. NASS is gathering information on production practices throughout this (second) phase. In the final phase, NASS will poll farmers about production costs, farm income, and production expenditures.
NASS safeguards the privacy of all respondents. The information provided will only be used for statistical purposes. Survey responses will be kept confidential and will not be published in identifiable form, in accordance with federal law.
