Celebrate New York Wines with Come Over October

By Blake Jackson

October in New York is a season of gathering. The leaves shift into vibrant colors, vineyards hum with activity, and the scent of harvest fills the air. It’s also the time when the national Come Over October (COO) movement encourages wine lovers to connect by inviting someone over, opening a bottle, and sharing a moment together.

“Come Over October captures the spirit of New York wines. Our wines are meant to be enjoyed at the table, with friends, family, and community,” said Sam Filler, Executive Director of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation (NYWGF). “This month is a reminder that wine isn’t just about what’s in the glass, it’s about who you share it with.”

New York, home to nearly 500 wineries, naturally embodies COO’s mission. Its wine industry is rooted in family traditions, multigenerational growers, and a commitment to making wines that are approachable, award-winning, and meant for everyday enjoyment. Collaboration is central to this community, with growers and winemakers working together to share resources and knowledge.

“I like to share New York wines with my family and friends because each bottle carries the story of our hardworking grape growers and winemakers people I know and admire,” said Jennifer Cooper, NYWGF Membership Manager.

For NYWGF staff, COO is personal. Kim Hughes, Director of Finance, shared how the tradition ties to harvest: “For me, Come Over October means sharing whatever role you play in New York’s wine story. It’s about opening a bottle, opening your world, and inviting others in.”

Others find connection in simple gatherings. Dana Alexander, Director of Operations, said, “It doesn’t have to be a big event just a potluck with friends is enough. Wine has a way of turning even a simple dinner into a celebration.”

To make participation easy, NYWGF offers Food Pairing Guides in multiple languages and resources like winery maps and sustainability listings, helping wine lovers explore and enjoy responsibly.

Whether through a sparkling toast, a shared meal, or a trip to wine country, COO reminds us that New York wines are about more than flavor they are about people, place, and connection.
