Michael Helms, program lead for Cornell’s Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Pesticide Safety Education Program, and recently retired Pesticide Safety Educator Dan Wixted were honored at last month’s American Association of Pesticide Safety Educators (AAPSE) annual meeting in Gulfport, Mississippi, Cornell IPM Director Alejandro Calixto announced.
“Mike and Dan exemplify the dedication and leadership that define the very best of pesticide safety education,” Calixto said. “Mike’s work securing liability insurance for AAPSE marks a historic milestone for the organization, while Dan’s decades of service and tireless advocacy for inclusive, science-based training have left an enduring legacy for all of us. Their recognition is not only well-deserved it’s a reflection of the profound impact they’ve had on pesticide safety education and the communities we serve.”
Helms received the AAPSE President’s Award, honoring members who make significant contributions to the association. Helms was recognized for helping AAPSE obtain professional and general liability insurance for the first time in its history.
Wixted was granted life membership in AAPSE for his exceptional contributions to pesticide safety education over more than three decades. Wixted efforts included advancing the development of certification manuals and exams for pesticide applicators, as well as providing outreach to thousands of users.
In addition, Wixted served two terms as AAPSE treasurer, founded and co-chaired a committee to explore translating training materials into non-English languages, participated in the audit committee, and led national professional development workshops on exam creation.
