Dairy Leaders Unite in Auburn to Drive Sustainability Goals

By Blake Jackson

Amid the stunning autumn scenery of Auburn in Cayuga County, members of SAI Platform’s Dairy Working Group convened for a four-day event focused on advancing sustainability in the dairy industry.

The gathering brought together 70 participants from 35 organizations, including farmers, researchers, and sustainability professionals, to strengthen collaboration within the global dairy supply chain.

Hosted by Cayuga Milk Ingredients and its partner farms, the event showcased the theme “Dairy Sustainability in Action.” Participants visited award-winning farms, shared expertise, and discussed innovative approaches to sustainable dairy production.

Interactive workshops covered a wide range of topics, including climate science, farmer-led innovation, ESG reporting, greenhouse gas measurement, deforestation, and regenerative agriculture.

“This latest Dairy Working Group meeting was an interesting mix of farm visits and workshops where we learned about cutting-edge innovations in feed efficiency, manure management, animal health and welfare, worker empowerment and environmental protection," said Nancy Winkelmolen, Sr Dairy Sustainability Specialist at Interfood.

"This was a timely opportunity for us to exchange knowledge and ideas on climate science, sustainability reporting, regenerative agriculture, and many other important topics.”

Attendees toured nine farms, each demonstrating unique sustainability strategies. Participants observed a shared commitment among farmers to collaboration and continuous improvement in areas such as animal welfare, soil health, and energy efficiency.

The discussions reinforced the importance of holistic farm management and collective progress toward sustainable dairy practices.

The workshops also helped define the Dairy Working Group’s next steps in becoming a global leader in sustainable dairy. Plans include developing shared tools, improving knowledge exchange, and setting best practices across the dairy supply chain from cooperatives to retailers.
