Whether it's deer in the woods, seals on the beach, ducks in a pond, or a dolphin in the bay--these animals are wild creatures that should never be fed supplemental food provided by humans. Though the intention may be to help the animal, feeding wildlife interferes with a natural, healthy balance between wildlife populations and their habitat.
If you observe a marine mammal or sea turtle in distress, immediately contact the New York Stranding Hotline by calling 631-369-9829. Sea turtles and marine mammals, such as dolphins, whales, and seals, are federally protected animals that require trained professionals authorized by NOAA Fisheries to handle these events. DEC works closely with NY Marine Rescue Center and Atlantic Marine Conservation Society in developing response plans that ensure the safety of the animal, and we ask the public to refrain from attempting to intervene. Increased human interaction can cause further stress to the animal and may weaken their condition and likelihood of survival.
