Fieldwork continues in New York despite weather

New York experienced favorable fieldwork conditions during the week ending September 22, 2024. With 7.0 days suitable for fieldwork, farmers made significant progress in various crop activities.

Crop Progress Highlights:

  • Apples: Harvest reached 41%, ahead of the 5-year average.
  • Cabbage: Harvest reached 69%, slightly behind the average.
  • Corn: 87% of corn reached the dough stage, and 58% were dented. Corn silage harvest was at 30%.
  • Fall Tillage: 39% of the land was tilled.
  • Grapes: Harvest reached 20%, with N/A for last year and the 5-year average.
  • Hay: Alfalfa hay's third and fourth cuttings were at 92% and 50%, respectively. Other hay cuttings were at 74% and 27%.
  • Onions: Dry harvest reached 67%, close to the average.
  • Potatoes: Harvest reached 55%, with N/A for last year.
  • Soybeans: Setting pods reached 95%, and dropping leaves reached 51%. Harvest was at 8%.
  • Sweet Corn: Harvest reached 74%, slightly behind the average.
  • Snap Beans: Harvest reached 54%, with N/A for last year.
  • Winter Wheat: Planting was at 8%, with N/A for last year and the 5-year average.

New York farmers made substantial progress in harvesting various crops, including apples, cabbage, corn, and soybeans. The favorable fieldwork conditions allowed for efficient operations and positioned crops for a successful season.
