Food Needs Rise as SNAP Faces Cuts

Food Needs Rise as SNAP Faces Cuts

By Blake Jackson

Food banks across New York report a rise in people seeking assistance. This growing need comes as recent budget changes passed by the House include cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), sparking concerns among advocates and volunteers. These cuts, if finalized, may significantly affect low-income families who are already struggling with food security.

Local food banks say demand has increased steadily since early spring. With fewer SNAP benefits, more families are turning to charitable services for support. Volunteers say this added pressure makes it harder to meet everyone's needs.

At the same time, two North Country students are making headlines for a more positive reason. They will represent their region at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which begins today. This national event brings together young students from across the U.S. who have worked hard to master spelling and vocabulary. Their participation is a proud moment for their schools and communities.

In addition, stargazers have something to look forward to this month. Astronomer Aileen O'Donoghue joined the studio to discuss the celestial wonders visible in the morning and evening skies. Planets like Jupiter and Saturn are bright this month, and several meteor showers may be visible depending on the weather. O'Donoghue encourages everyone to take a moment and enjoy the sky.

As communities deal with growing food insecurity, moments of learning and discovery remind us of the importance of public service and local support. NCPR continues to provide trusted news and community updates, thanks to generous listener donations. Supporting public radio helps keep essential information accessible to all.
