High school juniors and seniors and college students who picture themselves diagnosing dairy cows and helping calves take their first breath can get a rare behind‑the‑scenes view of large‑animal medicine this summer at the New York State Fair.
The New York Animal Agriculture Coalition (NYAAC) has reopened applications for its Aspiring Veterinarians Program, hosted inside the popular Dairy Cow Birthing Center on the Syracuse fairgrounds.
Selected students will complete one immersive three‑hour shift between August 20 and September 1.
Under the guidance of seasoned farm veterinarians, participants will conduct routine wellness exams, monitor expectant cows, and, if timing is right, observe live calf deliveries-an unforgettable lesson in neonatal care.
Because the Birthing Center is open to thousands of fairgoers each day, students will also practice communicating science to the public, fielding real‑time questions about animal health, nutrition, and modern farm practices.
The shadowing experience is designed to help young people confirm their career choice, gather tips for vet‑school applications, and build professional connections in New York’s dairy industry. There is no fee to apply, but space is limited. Applications must be submitted by July 18. Questions can be directed to Hannah@nyanimalag.org.
