For the week ending October 27, 2024, New York farmers experienced 6.0 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Topsoil moisture levels indicated that 1% was very short, 6% short, 90% adequate, and 3% surplus, while subsoil moisture was reported as 0% very short, 4% short, 93% adequate, and 3% surplus.
Key crop progress as of October 27, 2024, included several notable achievements. Apple harvest reached 90%, cabbage harvest hit 94%, and corn for silage harvesting was at 90%, aligning closely with the five-year averages. Corn maturity reached 80%, an increase from last week’s 64%, though slightly below last year’s 87%.
Corn harvested for grain showed progress at 34%, up from 19% last week and slightly above the five-year average of 27%. Fall tillage was recorded at 79% complete, slightly surpassing both last week and the five-year average.
Among other crops, grape harvest achieved 75%, alfalfa hay's fourth cutting was at 87%, and potatoes were 87% harvested.
Soybean fields reported 96% dropping leaves, with 66% harvested, up from 48% the previous week. Winter wheat planting was at 84%, and emergence reached 65%, outpacing last week’s progress.
These numbers reflect steady progress as New York farmers advance their seasonal fieldwork amid stable soil moisture levels.
