New York State is providing over $10.4 million to support animal shelters, rescues, and humane societies through the seventh round of its Companion Animal Capital Fund.
This program, launched in 2017, is the first state-funded initiative in the nation dedicated to improving animal shelter infrastructure.
"We’ve seen firsthand that funding provided to shelters and rescues through New York’s Companion Animal Capital Fund initiative is making a true difference, helping these organizations make critical upgrades that mean better care for New York’s animals as they await their forever homes," said Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball. "New York State is proud to offer this latest round, which will build on our incredible program successes so far, and we encourage all eligible entities to learn more and consider applying.”
Since its inception, the Companion Animal Capital Fund has awarded over $38 million to 98 projects across New York. Administered by the Department of Agriculture and Markets, the program offers grants to eligible organizations for capital projects such as kennel renovations, medical facility improvements, and shelter expansions.
These upgrades not only enhance animal well-being but can also lead to more efficient operations and lower overall costs.
The latest round of funding includes $4 million specifically designated for underserved areas and non-municipal shelters. Applicants must contribute a minimum of 10% of the total project cost. Applications are due by December 20, 2024, and more information can be found at agriculture.ny.gov/rfp-0342-companion-animal-capital-projects-fund.
State Senator Michelle Hinchey said, "New York’s Companion Animal Capital Fund has made a real difference for our local shelters, supporting vital facility upgrades that help keep animals safe and well cared for as they wait to be adopted into their forever families."
This announcement coincides with National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, a time to recognize the dedication of shelter staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to care for animals in need.
The Companion Animal Capital Fund serves as a concrete way for New York to support these organizations and ensure the well-being of countless animals awaiting their forever homes.
