New York Awards Grants for Watershed Protection

By Blake Jackson

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Water Resources Institute at Cornell University have awarded more than $371,000 in grants to support 11 watershed projects. These projects aim to protect and enhance the Great Lakes, Hudson River Estuary, and Mohawk River watersheds.

Funded by the State’s Environmental Protection Fund, these initiatives focus on protecting aquatic life, reducing pollution, managing invasive species, and supporting community education. Eight of the funded projects are part of the Great Lakes Action Agenda.

Binghamton University and Cornell University are researching the presence and impact of PFAS chemicals in Finger Lakes. Clarkson University is using artificial intelligence to predict coastal hazards on Lake Ontario.

SUNY Brockport is monitoring water quality in Braddock Bay, and other institutions are exploring innovative approaches like using rice paddies to clean farm runoff.

Three projects in the Hudson River Estuary and Mohawk River regions are also receiving support. Clarkson University is improving stream connectivity in the Fishkill Watershed.

Cornell University is partnering with middle school students to create educational art about the Mohawk River. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Riverkeeper are expanding community efforts to monitor microplastics in the Upper Hudson River.

“Protecting the health of New York's critical watersheds will help ensure that aquatic habitats continue to thrive, and communities are better prepared to withstand severe weather impacts along their shorelines,” said DEC Acting Commissioner Amanda Lefton.

These projects also reflect Governor Kathy Hochul’s commitment to environmental resilience. Her administration has allocated over $225 million to 165 clean water projects, including $197 million for environmental justice communities.
