On September 25, 2025, from 3:30 to 5:00 PM EDT, the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY will host an interactive event exploring the intersection of farming, climate, and journalism. Located at 219 W. 40th St., New York, the session aims to highlight how storytelling can support small farmers navigating unprecedented challenges.
Farmers today face a range of pressures, including climate impacts, shifts in policy, reduced funding, and a labor force under scrutiny. Simultaneously, journalists are challenged by an overwhelming amount of news coverage and competing priorities.
Despite these hurdles, food movements and small-scale farms across New York are advancing innovative solutions, while newsrooms like NPQ and initiatives such as The New Harvest Project are working to create civic spaces that amplify these stories of resilience and progress.
The event will begin with a brief panel discussion, followed by smaller story circles where journalists, farmers, and policy experts will collaborate. These sessions are designed to explore how storytelling can highlight solutions to political, environmental, and social challenges.
Participants include Sara Hudson, NPQ CEO and Interim Editor in Chief; Angely Mercado, climate reporter; Iris Crawford, editor and creator of The New Harvest Project; and farmers Monti Lawson, Olivia Fuller, and DK Kinard, all of whom bring firsthand experience in sustainable farming and community engagement.
