New York farmers benefited from favorable soil moisture conditions during the week ending Sunday, November 12, 2023. The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported that there were 5 days suitable for fieldwork during the week. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated as 0 percent very short, 3 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 17 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated as 0 percent very short, 3 percent short, 87 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus.
These conditions are favorable for crop growth and development. Farmers are taking advantage of the good weather to get ahead on their fall fieldwork.
Here are some specific examples of how the favorable soil moisture conditions are impacting New York farmers:
- Corn harvest is progressing well, with 59 percent of the crop harvested, compared to the 5-year average of 53 percent.
- Soybeans harvest is also well underway, with 88 percent of the crop harvested, compared to the 5-year average of 76 percent.
- Winter wheat planting is progressing well, with 85 percent of the crop planted, compared to the 5-year average of 78 percent.
Overall, New York farmers are benefiting from the favorable soil moisture conditions. The good weather is allowing them to get ahead on their fall fieldwork and is expected to lead to a good harvest.
