New York Peach and Pear Harvests Begin



According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in New York, there were 6.5 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday.

Topsoil moisture supplies were 13 percent very short, 62 percent short, 23 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were 10 percent very short, 36 percent short, 54 percent adequate, and 0 percent surplus.

Fifty-five percent of the winter wheat harvest for grain is complete, up substantially since last week's reported 9 percent complete.

Barley harvested for grain was 34 percent complete, double the pace of the five-year average of 17 percent.

Sweet corn harvested was at 20 percent complete, while the cabbage harvest was 9 percent, slight ahead of the five-year average of 6 percent.

The New York peach harvest has begun in earnest, with 9 percent complete. The pear harvest is also beginning, with 8 percent of the crop picked this past week. The New York tart cherry harvest continues with 72 percent complete, slightly behind last year's pace of 79 percent complete.
